He grew up in Pearsall, Frio County, and lived there with his father. Her father taught junior high school math and had a 2,000-acre cattle ranch near Big Wells, Texas.
When he was in fourth grade, his parents divorced. From then on George and his brother John Jr. lived with their father. He began his musical career while attending Pearsall High School.
He eloped with his high school sweetheart Norma Voss and initially consummated the marriage in Mexico on December 4, 1971. While in Hawaii, George and Norma gave birth to their first child, Jennifer, on October 6, 1972.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1971 as an infantryman. He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1975, eventually attaining the rank of Corporal in the United States Army.
