Best Upcoming Blockbuster Movies of 2024
Your Apple Watch buzzes; it's time to raise your heart rate. If your goal for 2024 is rest and relaxation, think again. Hollywood is unleashing several adrenaline-packed action movies throughout the calendar year, complete with a diverse cast of characters ranging from spies to bikers to superheroes to monsters.
There's plenty of action cinema to discover for this year.
Argylle,
A new spy film that's been causing a stir is "SwiftiGossip," written by Argyll Taylor Swift, though the title of that track is yet to be confirmed. The action flick comes from the director of "Kingsman" and features a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, and many more. The film follows a comedic novelist following a secret agent who finds himself embroiled in the CIA's espionage plans.
Premieres on February 2, 2024.
Madame Web
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Girls' version of Madame Web hits theaters on Valentine's Day with Dakota Johnson starring as the titular character, Madame Web, a mutant contender in Spider-Man's world. In her first solo feature film, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, and Isabela Merced play three young women who must save Madame Web to save their lives.
Premieres on February 14, 2024.
Dune: Part Two
Among the most anticipated releases of the year, "Dune: Part Two" arrives in theaters in March, delayed from its original October 2023 release date amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike of that year. The film sees the return of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård, and many others to the famous ensemble of "Dune," along with new faces including Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Leah Sedoux.
Premieres on March 1, 2024.
Drive Away Doll
Under the direction of Ethan Cohen, of the Cohen Brothers duo, Drive Away Doll is a forthcoming action-comedy-road film. Starring Margot Robbie, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ben Feldstein, Coleman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon, the film follows a couple on a road trip through the picturesque landscape of Tallahassee. As they mourn the demise of their partnership, they must take deep breaths for one-half of our duo's heartbreak and navigate their way through some criminal escapades and create chaos.
Premieres on February 23, 2024.
Love Lies Bleeding
Director Roz Glass's latest thriller, "Love Lies Bleeding," recently celebrated its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, kicking off discussions about another new action flick of the year. In the movie, Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian portray an unlikely duo who find themselves entangled in the underworld of an infamous Las Vegas bodybuilding celebrity. A lot is happening here.

Road House
A reboot of the 1989 film of the same name, "2024's Road House" stars Jake Gillenhaal as a retired UFC fighter who finds himself working as a bouncer at a bar along Florida's coast – glamorous work. The original film starred Patrick Swayze and was set in Missouri. At its time, "Road House" didn't fare well. It was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. Here's hoping the remake will improve upon its predecessor.

Civil War
Another A24 epic action film, "Civil War," comes from the acclaimed writer-director Alex Garland, known for his previous work on "Ex Machina" and "Annihilation." Garland's shift to cinema has been marked by the unsettling "Civil War," still regarded as one of the most chilling movies to date. Led by Kirsten Dunst, the film follows a group of intrepid journalists who trace a special operations organization in a post-apocalyptic future United States.

Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare
Another spy film for your records, "The Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare" comes from writer-director Guy Ritchie and is based on the 2014 novel "Churchill's Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII." Starring Henry Cavill (the best-kept secret agent of the year), Eiza González, Henry Golding, and many more, the film centers around a special operations group during World War II that helped shape the modern world with their black ops.

The Folly Guy
This upcoming action comedy stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, based on the series of the same name from the 1980s. Gosling plays a veteran stuntman who becomes an unlikely movie star in an attempt to save his film and his ailing career.

Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga
The latest installment in the post-apocalyptic epic of the Mad Max universe, "Furiousa," sees Anya Taylor-Joy take on the role of a young Imperator Furiosa, beloved by fans of Mad Max: Fury Road – portrayed by Charlize Theron. The film features Chris Hemsworth as a leader of a biker gang who kidnaps a young Furiosa amidst a world torn asunder.

The Bikeriders
Starring Jodie Comer and Austin Butler, "The Bikeriders" leans more towards drama than action, but within the realm of a biker gang, we anticipate some thrilling moments. The film follows a Chicago-based biker gang in the 1960s through their lives and conflicts over more than a decade.

Twister
A new twist on your favorite disaster film, "Twisters," comes from director Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glenn Powell, and Anthony Ramos. Not much is known about the new film yet, but we can be sure it will follow in the footsteps of the 1996 hit "Twister."

Borderlands
Director Eli Roth brings us another gangster flick in 2024, this time based on the video game series of the same name. "Borderlands" will star Kate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, and Jamie Lee Curtis, following the adventures of a band of misfits as they track down a mysterious criminal in their own galaxy.
