World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested Friday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, outside the PGA Championship after allegedly trying to drive around a fatal accident scene. He was charged with multiple offenses including criminal mischief and second-degree assault on a police officer, according to Jefferson County court records.
Scheffler faced charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and failing to obey traffic signals, along with the more serious charge of second-degree assault on a police officer
He was later released from jail and returned to Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the tournament. Shortly after 10 a.m., he hit his first tee shot of the day, earning a round of applause from the crowd and birdied the first hole.

Scheffler called the incident a "misunderstanding."
“This morning, I was following the directions of the police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so, considering the tragic accident that occurred earlier, and there was a significant misunderstanding about what I thought was happening," he said in a statement on Instagram. “I never intended to ignore any directions. I hope to put this behind me and focus on golf today.”
The arrest of the world's top golfer, known as a "proper, outstanding" player who had just become a father days earlier, dramatically transformed one of golf's major tournaments. ESPN's PGA set anchor Dave Fleming described it as "a championship amidst chaos."
According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, who witnessed and recorded the arrest, the incident began around 6 a.m. when Scheffler drove to Valhalla Golf Club for the tournament's second round.
Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said a pedestrian was struck by a bus early in the morning, leading to increased police presence around the course entrance.
When Scheffler arrived, he attempted to drive around the accident scene, which led to his arrest, as first reported by ESPN. "A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler drove about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance," ESPN reported.
“Scheffler then stopped his car at Valhalla's entrance. The officer began shouting at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited, the officer pushed him against the car and immediately handcuffed him,” Darlington posted on X. Scheffler was in a marked courtesy car for players, Darlington added on ESPN.
Darlington's video showed police walking Scheffler, who was handcuffed, to a police vehicle.
"He's going to jail right now," an officer at the scene said in the video.
Attorney calls arrest a 'misunderstanding'
A senior law enforcement officer said Louisville police are expected to review the incident's video and issue a statement about the arrest on Friday. Preliminary information suggests an officer tried to prevent Scheffler from driving through and Scheffler's car made contact with the officer. The officer was not seriously injured.
Scheffler's attorney said the arrest was due to a misunderstanding.
Attorney Steve Romines told CNN affiliate WLKY, "They were directing traffic, he was holding his media credentials and was going in the direction instructed. He wasn't aware of the previous crash."
Romines suggested the officer managing traffic might not have been informed about the event details, leading to the communication breakdown.
He declined to comment on the assault charge, stating he would let the case proceed in court. "Scottie will fully cooperate," Romines said.
The pedestrian killed in the earlier accident was a staff member of the PGA of America, which organizes the PGA Championship.
"This is heartbreaking for all of us involved with the PGA Championship. Our deepest condolences go out to their family and loved ones," the organization said.
The individual's death "puts everything into perspective," Scheffler said in his statement.
Golfweek senior writer David Dusek noted that Scheffler's arrest starkly contrasted with his clean image.
"Scottie Scheffler is one of the most impressive, righteous, outstanding, and respected players on the PGA Tour," Dusek said. "He's known for being very calm and composed on the golf course, and he maintains that demeanor off the course as well."
Scheffler had been an overwhelming favorite going into the season's second major, aiming to build on his Masters victory last month.
After a stellar 2023 campaign, where he retained the PGA Tour Player of the Year title, Scheffler solidified his position as a dominant force in men's golf this season. Just a week after a commanding victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he mounted a stunning late charge to defend his title at The Players Championship.
Since then, the 27-year-old has seemed almost unstoppable, winning the RBC Heritage just a week after donning his second green jacket at Augusta, capturing four wins in five starts.
Scheffler had stepped back from competitive play last week to be with his wife Meredith for the birth of their first child, Bennett.
"Sitting at home with the girl I dated in high school and our child, with the green jacket hanging in the closet, was a surreal and humbling feeling," he said. "I wanted to be as grateful as possible."
After playing in Louisville on Thursday, Scheffler said he was "hoping to clear up a few mistakes."
"I missed two putts that I felt I should have made today, but that happens when the greens are a bit chewed up," he said. "I felt there were some things I could clean up tomorrow, but overall it was a solid round."
