The Fairfax County Police Department released body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting on Monday, September 16, 2024, involving a knife-wielding woman in Reston.
The incident, which began as a welfare check, resulted in the death of the woman.

An officer responded to a welfare check at a home in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive at 10:17 a.m. after the department received a request from a mental health professional to check on 33-year-old Sydney Wilson, who was reported to be agitated.
A crisis intervention-trained officer knocked on Wilson's door. The video shows Wilson opening the door and immediately shutting it in the officer's face.
The officer continued to try to talk to Wilson through the door for 2 minutes and 45 seconds before she opened it again, this time armed with a knife.
According to officials, Wilson immediately attacked the officer, striking him in the head.
The officer was able to retreat and attempted to de-escalate the situation with verbal commands, as seen and heard in the video.
As Wilson continued advancing on the officer with the knife, cornering him, he fired his weapon, hitting Wilson three times, police said.
At a press conference Monday afternoon, Chief Kevin Davis said, "He did what we trained him to do and what we expect him to do."
Responding officers began providing assistance until EMS personnel arrived. Wilson was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials reported.

The involved officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials identified the officer as a 14-year veteran assigned to the Reston Patrol District.
"Any loss of life is something we all mourn," Chief Davis said. "The life lost in this particular case is no different; she has family and friends and loved ones who care about her, who undoubtedly are grieving and distressed, and we acknowledge that, and our prayers and thoughts are with this particular family."
Davis stated that it had been 494 days since the department had an officer-involved shooting.
"We are committed to training," Davis said.
According to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, every law enforcement agency is required to have 20-25% of its patrol division trained in crisis intervention. Davis reported that 59% of Fairfax County police are trained.
The Chief also explained the department's co-responder program, where a clinician is regularly dispatched in situations involving a potential mental or behavioral health crisis. This led the Chief to pose the following question: Was this call best handled by a co-responder team?
"I believe that a co-responder would have found themselves in a very dangerous position when this woman came to the door the second time," Chief Davis said. "If we can't protect our clinicians, the entire co-responder program will ultimately be at potential risk."
Per department policy, the officer was placed on restricted duty pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting.
There are still questions as to why a second officer wasn’t dispatched from the beginning.
