People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) conducted a covert investigation between April and July 2006 at Butterball's facility in Ozark, Arkansas.
An undercover investigator detailed shocking acts of cruelty witnessed at the facility, including instances of sexual abuse against birds. According to PETA, workers slaughtered and handled over 50,000 turkeys daily under grim conditions.
In a disturbing video, the investigator claimed to have seen a Butterball employee insert their fingers into a turkey's cloaca or vaginal canal "for fun." Another worker was reportedly seen simulating intercourse with a restrained turkey.
The investigator recalled another incident where one employee held a bird by its legs, jerking it backward while making vulgar remarks, and a second employee punched the bird.
The footage also depicted workers violently handling turkeys—throwing, striking, and hanging them to kill.

Amber Canavan, Vegan Campaign Project Manager at PETA, told DailyMail.com: "There's nothing humane happening in the slaughterhouse."
According to the investigator’s log, "A worker smashed a live bird's head until its skull cracked and laughed while wiping blood off his boots." Birds were also reportedly thrown onto concrete and punched.
During the investigator’s 40 days at the facility, workers were observed using metal bars to beat birds, breaking their backs and legs.
The investigator described haunting scenes, including birds with exposed spines, dislocated limbs, and protruding eyeballs.
"Workers were clearly not trained in animal welfare; some even bragged about their abuse," Canavan emphasized.
The footage, resurfacing days before Thanksgiving, has sparked outrage among social media users, with many calling for a boycott.
“This breaks my heart,” commented one user on a TikTok clip of the video.
Another user expressed, “I just bought a Butterball turkey today. I’ll definitely be returning it tomorrow.”
One commenter asked, “Why are people so awful? I have turkeys and chickens—they’re so sweet and loving.”
In another TikTok post, a user declared, “No Butterball turkey for us this year,” calling the company “disgusting.”
“This made me physically sick,” another viewer reacted to the graphic video.
A woman shared a video of herself returning a Butterball turkey, saying, “After these SA (sexual assault) allegations, I can’t keep this turkey.”
Someone else commented, “I swear I’m going to buy one just to bury it and cry. It’s so heartbreaking what these birds went through.”
Canavan noted that such reactions show the public's growing awareness. “We’ve seen dozens of people pledging to forgo turkey this year just from online responses.”
She stressed the availability of vegetarian options, adding, “It’s easier than ever to choose foods that don’t require animals to endure the horrors of slaughterhouses.”
Leading up to Thanksgiving, PETA is sharing social media content urging people to skip turkey this year.
Canavan added, “It’s never too late to grab a vegan roast and spare turkeys from slaughterhouse horrors.”
In response to the backlash, a Butterball representative told DailyMail.com:
“We’re aware of a nearly 20-year-old video being reshared on social media. This video is outdated and does not reflect our current animal welfare policies in any way.
“Animal care and well-being are central to who we are as a company, and we’re committed to the ethical and responsible care of our flocks. This includes ongoing efforts to ensure the health and well-being of our turkeys.”
The spokesperson added that Butterball’s facilities undergo annual third-party audits to ensure compliance with over 200 science-based standards for turkey care.
Butterball remains the first and only turkey company certified by the American Humane Association. They are proud to supply 1 in 3 turkeys served at Thanksgiving tables.
This November alone, Butterball reportedly sold nearly 15 million turkeys nationwide.
PETA claimed that their 2006 exposΓ© was not an isolated incident.
“PETA has conducted more recent investigations that still reveal rampant abuse,” Canavan said, referencing a 2021 investigation at Plainville Farms. That case documented workers simulating sexual acts on turkeys, leading to criminal charges against employees for over 140 offenses at a Pennsylvania facility.
While Butterball faced no charges from the 2006 investigation, employees were prosecuted for a separate incident.
In 2011, authorities raided a North Carolina Butterball plant after workers were caught abusing turkeys.
A similar PETA investigation documented multiple instances of animal cruelty at the site, leading to charges against several employees. Workers were caught on video kicking defenseless birds.
