The murder of a 50-year-old business tycoon was as shocking as it was brazen. In broad daylight outside the New York Hilton Midtown, a shooter carried out the crime and fled on an e-bike.

The assailant struck during one of the busiest times of the day on New York City’s bustling streets, targeting the CEO of the world’s largest health insurance company. At close range, the shooter fired at his target from behind, then cleared a weapon jam and fired more rounds before escaping on an electric bike.

Who Is the Killer on the Run?

Could the murderer be a disgruntled health insurance policyholder, a cold-blooded individual, or someone with a completely different profile and motive?

Here is what the police and eyewitnesses have reported so far about the tall, slender killer dressed in black:

The Shooter and the Attack

Surveillance photos released by police show the suspected gunman stopping at a nearby Starbucks before the shooting. Later, video footage captures him “lying in wait” outside the Hilton on 54th Street and Avenue of the Americas for nearly five minutes, blending into the morning rush in the commercial and theater district.

The shooter wore all black: a hat, jacket, ski mask, pants, sneakers with white soles, and a gray backpack. Police described him as 6’1” tall with a lean build.

The target, CEO Brian Thompson, was scheduled to speak at a United Healthcare investor conference at the Hilton—a widely publicized event. It appears the shooter ambushed Thompson at the hotel’s entrance on 54th Street.

At 6:45 a.m., surveillance footage shows the attacker shooting Thompson from behind, methodically clearing a gun jam, and firing again. The CEO collapsed, fatally wounded in the back and calf.

Police recovered three spent shell casings, three live rounds, and, surprisingly, a discarded cellphone in a nearby alley where the gunman escaped on foot.

The firearm, equipped with a silencer, left bystanders stunned—nobody heard gunshots even amidst the morning chaos.

According to ABC News, the police also found a water bottle and candy wrapper near the spot where the suspect waited for Thompson.

Escape on Two Wheels

Evoking scenes from The Day of the Jackal, a movie about a professional assassin starring Eddie Redmayne, the shooter fled the scene on foot and then on an e-bike.

Initially, police believed the killer used a Citi Bike—a GPS-equipped bike from the city-sponsored fleet. However, CNN later cited a law enforcement source stating this information was incorrect.

The escape route took the suspect through an alley next to the famed Ziegfeld Theater across from the Hilton, then onto a bike, heading half a mile into Central Park. Surveillance cameras last spotted him at 6:48 a.m., according to ABC News.

The Target: CEO Brian Thompson

Thompson, a married father of two from Minnetonka, Minnesota, had a long career in healthcare.

He had been with United Healthcare for 20 years, joining after seven years as a management consultant at PwC. Before becoming the CEO of the $610 billion market-cap company—ranked #8 on Fortune’s Global 500 list—Thompson led various UHC divisions, including Medicare.

Thompson was embroiled in a legal case brought by the City of Hollywood Firefighters Pension Fund, alleging insider trading. The lawsuit accused United Healthcare of unloading shares before the Department of Justice announced an investigation, earning $15.1 million. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren urged the SEC to investigate the claims. United Healthcare filed a motion to dismiss the case just a week prior, public records show.

Why Was Thompson Targeted?

New York’s Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, declined to speculate on the motive. “The purpose of this murder is currently unknown, but based on the evidence we have so far, it appears the victim was specifically targeted,” Kenny said. “However, we don’t yet know why.”

Thompson’s widow, Paulette, revealed he had received threats—possibly related to his role managing a massive health insurance company with 52 million customers worldwide and coverage for 90% of the U.S. population.

“There were threats,” she told NBC News. “Mainly, I don’t know... Lack of coverage? I’m not sure of the details. I just know he mentioned some people were threatening him.”

Could the killer have been an irate customer denied a claim, an employee nursing a grievance, or was this corporate rivalry or sabotage?

Experts point to the shooter’s use of a silencer and skill in clearing the weapon’s malfunction as signs of an experienced or even professional assassin.

However, investigators seem inclined to believe the crime was too clumsily executed to be a professional hit.

Would a seasoned assassin allow their image to be captured on Starbucks surveillance, leave behind a phone, or leave DNA traces on a water bottle and candy wrapper? These clues suggest the killer may have been an amateur driven by revenge or another motive.

The Bigger Picture

Was this murder the ultimate act of rage against America’s often-despised health insurance system? A crime of passion? Or the calculated elimination of a high-powered executive? No one knows yet.

What’s clear is the audacity of the daylight killing on one of Manhattan’s busiest streets. Now, an epic manhunt is underway in America’s largest city.

The police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
