Muan County, South Korea, December 29 (Reuters) – On Sunday, South Korea witnessed its deadliest plane crash in decades when an aircraft belly-landed, skidded off the runway, and struck a wall at Muan International Airport before exploding into a ball of fire.
Jeju Air flight 7C2216, arriving from the Thai capital Bangkok with 175 passengers and six crew members, attempted to land at the airport in the country’s south after 9 a.m. (0000 GMT), according to South Korea's Transport Ministry.
Two crew members have been rescued, and authorities suggested the rest on board are presumed dead.
According to the Transport Ministry, this is the most catastrophic plane accident involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades.
The twin-engine Boeing 737-800 was seen in local media footage skidding off the runway without visible landing gear before crashing into a wall in a fiery explosion.
"Only the tail section retained some shape, and the rest of the plane appears almost impossible to identify," Lee said in a press briefing.
Muan Fire Chief Lee Jung-hyun stated that two crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued from the burning tail section of the plane. The head of the local public health center reported that those with moderate to severe injuries are being treated in hospitals.

Investigators are examining potential causes, including bird strikes and weather conditions, Lee said.
Citing airport authorities, Yonhap News Agency reported that a bird strike might have damaged the landing gear.
Lee added that authorities are likely searching nearby areas for bodies ejected from the plane.

Hours after the crash, family members gathered in the airport's arrival area, some crying and embracing, as Red Cross volunteers handed out blankets.
