Federal officials said they would file a request to have Zapata-Cayll turned over to ICE after his criminal case concludes. This would allow for his deportation.
At about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, an unidentified woman was sleeping on a stationary F train at the Stillwell Avenue subway station when a man set her on fire, police reported.
After leaving the subway, the suspect sat on a platform bench, where an officer's body camera captured a clear image of him. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, This image was released publicly through a wanted poster.
“All responding officers who were unaware of the suspect’s presence initially found him sitting on a platform bench just outside the train car," Tisch said. "Their body-worn cameras captured a clear, detailed view of the suspect.”
Tisch added that the man “quietly approached the victim and, as we believe, used a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing.”
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
